"To the employee prison..."
Jun. 30th, 2004 04:03 pmWell, I finished reading the first Harry Potter book. It wasn't very long. Of course they get longer. And it wasn't too bad. I was surprised at the end that Professor Quirrel did it. I thought for sure it was Snape. But is it the best thing I ever read? No. I think that Garth Nix is a much stronger writer than J.k. Rowling. He's a stronger world builder, much more imaginative, and writes more interestingly than she does. But like I said it wasn't terrible. I will either check out thenext one or borrow it from a friend. The Harry Potter books aren't anything that I want to sink money into. But all around entertaining. I thought that she could have explained things better. I also don't understand the sharp divide between magic and technology. Does anyone have any idea what a giant pain in the ass quill pens are?! I don't understand why they aren't just using ballpoints. I also wonder at the lack of even a card catalog in the library. No wonder they couldn't find what they were looking for. And my gosh, how much hanky panky must go on at Hogwarts! All those secret passageways and the girls' dorms NOT being that far removed from the boys'.
And why aren't unicorns extinct? Their horns and hair seem to be used in lots of spells. So do the unicorns just offer their body parts? Or are there cowboy wizards who go out and wrangle unicorns to safely harvest their horns and tails and manes much as sheep are sheared once a year? The same goes for Phoenix and dragons. What IS a dragon heart string and HOW is it obtained? How come there is only one wizard sport? Shouldn't there be a couple more?
The thing that intrigued me most about the book was the sorting hats first idea that Harry should be in Slytherin. What a book THAT would have been.
I finally managed to get myself a Deviant art gallery after a hellish attempt at signing up. http://spiderliing666.deviantart.com/ I also managed to upload a couple pieces of art. One of them, Eva Fortuna, is a Cafe Press design that I finally put on t-shirts. Yay! So go check out my Cafe Press Store for new items! http://www.cafeshops.com/spiderling
