I hate new words
Jun. 28th, 2009 08:56 pmI hate new words replacing already servicable words that have been in place fore AGES, except everyone acts like the new word somehow describes A NEW IDEA, when infact it's an old idea which already HAS a word to describe it. Case in point TROPE. My latest pet peeve- have you heard of a trope? It's completely retarded, they-the internet deciders of cool and lingo- have unearthed some ancient word and now using it to describe 'conventions' in writng- oh, and it's also DISTINGUISHED from a cliche. The retarded part is #1-convention is a perfectly good word that is already in use and #2-most conventions are cliche, AND therefore BY DEFINITION ARE TROPES. Which is actually IN the definition of trope as seen below...
trope
Pronunciation: \ˈtrōp\ Function: noun Etymology: Latin tropus, from Greek tropos turn, way, manner, style, trope, from trepein to turn Date: 1533

1 a: a word or expression used in a figurative sense : figure of speech b: a common or overused theme or device : cliché <the usual horror movie tropes>2: a phrase or verse added as an embellishment or interpolation to the sung parts of the Mass in the Middle Ages
Now how on earth did this start describing typical plot conventions used in books and TV? And who the fuck dusted this one off? Someone who I think very obviously wants to show off how bloody smart they think they because THEY read the dictionary.
I am a pretty smart person of decent education and I have never heard the word 'trope' until LAST WEEK when I saw it twice. Here is the link to tvTropes.whatever http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage And as described- tropes are CONVENTIONS. Apparently they just can't be bothered to type a word as long as convention. But that still doesn't explain why they can't be bothered to type the word cliche.
