Writing Meme Q13
May. 2nd, 2010 07:08 pm13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
Hmmmm.... Well I like the culture in Ambriel, but I'm very excited about a novel in the beginning stages of being outlined. I don't think I've ever written a contemporary culture other than American. The rest are ones I make up. I mean they don't have names. Actually I haven't even named the Empire where Ambriel lives... everyone just calls it the Empire... I don't know, anyone have questions for me? I like the Sennecherib a lot from Sepulcher but I've never written them in a story before so I don't think they count. They are wonderful though, humorless, buraucratic, predators. They are immensely boring and I love them for it :)
Soooo, other stuff... I watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-along blog. Boy, Joss Whedon just can't stand to be happy can he? Also I think he is a big fan of the Venture Brothers because that might almost have been called The Venture Brothers Musical, only from the Monarch's POV. Sometimes it occurs to me that Joss Whedon isn't all that good. Or maybe just not all he is cracked up to be. Although he does seem like a very nice persn. I went to the Firefly panel at con years ago before the show started airing on Fox and he seemed very nice. He's very smart too, you can tell. But- and I will be NAILED for saying this, Firefly was terrible. I have a laundry list of exactly why that is as long as my arm. But it was deservedly cancelled. Dollhouse was an improvement but ever since Buffy he hasn't been able to make a show that really captured a certain zietgeist. Nothing of his has captured hearts and minds the way Buffy did and I wonder if he will. Not that my opinion amunts to a hill of beans. And I wonder how well Buffy is aging... But if my advice could be heard by Mr. Whedon I would say, lighten up. Flex those comedy muscles in the service of comedy. Not everything needs to be tragic. Relax and make something funny. Check the philosophy at the door and go forth with good humor. I know you have it in you!
