A year of buying nothing...
Feb. 20th, 2006 07:10 pmI saw this newsclip on tv about people who are going to buy nothing new for an entire year. And I decided to give it a shot...within reason. On tv they said they would buy new food, healthcare, things that will never come second-hand. So, I'll do that.
Most of the things I buy are books, manga, CDs, DS games, and all those can be gotten second-hand at stores and on the internet. For clothes I decided on consignment stores, vintage stores, and if I absolutely have to, thrift stores. I will buy new shoes and underwear and swimsuits.
The EGL clothes are not that corporate. Many of them I have custom made anyway. So, they actually employ someone.
I can regift and make presents and I will need to buy art supplies. Those can't really be gotten second-hand.
The other exclusions are things that I'm saving up for. I'm saving up for a Heath superDolfie and I'm saving up to buy artbooks at Kinokuniya. Those are for reference though.
The idea of this is to say NO to mass consumption. Most of our wants are manufactured by advertising anyway. So if there's anything that can bring down giant corporations, it's people refusing to buy their crap.
I will post my purchases on LJ for all to see so you can track my spending.
