San Diego Comicon report
Jul. 22nd, 2005 02:24 pmI am back from San Diego! I've been back for a week but I'm still unpacking. Sorry for my terrible laziness. BUT: here it is!
My fabulous report!
I'll start with the bad first. It took 10 and 1/2 hours to get home! The train from San Diego to LA broke repeatedly! After about the third time they tried to fix it, they finally admitted defeat. By then we were so late there was another northbound coming up behind us. They had that train pass ours and then back up and we hooked up to that one. We were towed into LA about 4:00 pm. Most passengers were getting off at LA but I had a bus connection to make. Luckily they left a bus behind! So then it was on to Bakersfield where the last train was already gone. They had to bus everyone home. I finally got home at 10:30 pm.
Now for all the good! I had lots of fun. My friend Abi, came out this year and was roomy #1. My second (secret) roomy was Jason and the 4th and super secret roomy was his brother. That meant much cheaper hotel bills.
On Thursday, we went shopping in the Dealers' room and then went to the mall! I bought two blouses at Nordstrom'(or as one lady on the bus home called it "Nordy's"). I found a bunch of Charmy Kitty stuff at the Sanrio in Horton Plaza and I bought a shirt at Hot Topic.
The signing on Thursday went well. I sold about 6-7 copies of Avigon. The coolest thing that happened was meeting someone whom I had made friends with at CSSSA! That was really surreal!
Everyone kept asking me where they could buy a copy of Avigon. I told them the Image booth had it. I don't know if anyone actually ran over there and bought it though.
On Friday I didn't really do any shopping. But one of my favorite finds was Dare Detectives by Ben Caldwell. He had a table and a really good display. He was also selling three sketchbooks but they were kind of pricey at $10 each. After I got home it occurred to me that I could have tried trading him a copy of Avigon for 2 of the sketchbooks. Go check him out at http://www.daredetectives.com I did finally buy his book from the Dark Horse booth on Saturday. The woman at Dark Horse was really nice. I was trying to dig 95 cents out of my tiny backpack and she let me have it for an even $5.
Either Friday or Saturday, I don't remember which, I went to a fan meeting for Dollfie and Asian ball-jointed doll enthusiasts. I got to see lots of beautiful dolls. And I must admit, I like several of the dolls from Luts better than the dollfies! Now I'm trying to get a white-skinned Lishe from Luts.
On Saturday, I did all my last minute shopping. The dealers' room was PACKED! There were actually foot-trafficjams! J-list had a DVD dating-sim game from Japan on sale. It's by a company called Hirameki. Apparently they edited it and put it out in English. The art looked so cute and it was only $25! I thought I would give it a try. I'm hoping it's edited enough :)
Saturday night was the Tokyopop dinner. I was so sad that it conflicted with the premier of and EGL film called Kamikaze Girls! VIZ had a bunch of lolies handing out postcards on Friday. For a little while I considered going to the film but the TP dinner turned out to be really cool. It was very intimidating for a little while. There was a BIG room full of people who all seemed to know each other. I would have bailed if Abi hadn't been along. But I did finally get talking to people and even found $5 on the floor. There was a drawing contest done by the restaurant which I think I should have won. I drew the cutest girl standing in spaghetti dressed in grape leaves and hot pants. No one else did anything cuter.
Then finally on Sunday, it was time to go home. I ran over to the Con to spend my last few bills and then had to run for the train. I got there just as they were boarding.
I learned a valuable lesson during this trip. Cheddar muffins do not travel well! It never occurred to me that they had to be refrigerated. BUT as a kind lady on the bus pointed out, "They are a dairy product."
