Saw Watchmen today. And let me say WOW. What a great movie that was. The music is what really took it over the top.The songs picked where phenominal and evocative and apropos in a way movie songs TRY to be but don't often acheive. The opening sequence should go down in movie and comic book history. I will say however that I think the general movie going audience will be confused by the film. As I was leaving the theater I heard two women talking and one of them, a vague note of horror in her voice said, " I thought it'd be like X-men". Well, X-men it's not. It's actually about as far from X-men as you can get.

The film manages to incorporate a goodly portion of the many layers comprising the graphic novel which is certainly a feat. One problem  with the film was that certain things were a little too convenient. Information obtained too easily. BUT The biggest disappointment was that the ending was changed. In the book Ozymandias' plan was to fake an alien invasion to incite peace with a cataclysmic event. In the film he frames Dr. Manhatten. So that was sad. I was really looking forward to the fake aliens Ozymandias genetically engineered. Not that the outcome didn't reamain the same but it seemed an odd thing to change for what was on the whole a faithful adaptation.

The cinematography was really excellent and the cast first rate. It used some of the sction slow-downs from 300 but thankfully not as many as 300 had.

And oh my god, did I mention the music?

Hey, can anyone tell me if Rorschach died at the end of the book? I can't remember. He may well have. But I aven't read it since college.

My mom was impressed by the movie too. If I can get a copy of the graphic I think she'd like to read it. I'd kind of like to read it again too. It's been a loooog time.

What's really interesting to me is that as seminal a work as Watchmen is it's something so directly linked to the tradition of American Superhero comics that it couldn't happen anywhere else as it where. It dismantles the very idea of superheroes while reassembling it into something more realistic and for frightening. But it's also a book that can only happen once. Like the LoTR all that comes after is only a sad shadow of that one work. To this day I think a lot of people want to chAnge the very idae of superheroes, bring something new to the genre but the fact is it's already been done. By Watchmen.
